Adelfio Elio Cardinale

Adelfio Elio Cardinale was born in Palermo, and is married to deputy public prosecutor Annamaria Palma, with a son.
He was a student of world-renowned radiologist, scientist and researcher Pietro Cignolini, of whom he is the successor.
He obtained a university degree in Medicine in 1965, and completed a fellowship in Radiology in 1967, with full marks and laude.
From 1992 to 2001, he was the director of the ÒPietro CignoliniÓ School of Radiology at the University of Palermo, and of the Postgraduate School of Radiology and Oncological Radiotherapy.
From 1991 to 1994 he was the Deputy Rector of the University of Palermo. From 1996 to 2000 he was the National President of SIRM (Italian Association of Radiology).
Currently he is a professor of radiology at the University of Palermo, President of Sicily's Health Committee for Clinical Risks, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (since March 2001).
He received an Honorary Degree in Medicine from the University of Bucharest, Romania, for his outstanding scientific achievements and for having promoted biomedical and clinical culture in Europe and overseas.
He is an Honorary Member of the Italian Association of Radiology and of many foreign radiology associations alike.
He received the "Città di Monreale" Award for Scientific Culture in 1994, the "Oscar per la Medicina" Award in 2003 (for his commitment in science, research and dissemination of culture), the "Pigna d'Argento" International Award in 2004 (recognizing him as the most valuable representative of medicine, and for his social and humanitarian activities). He was the President of the 41st National Meeting of the Italian Association of Radiology, and the President of over 50 national and international radiology meetings.
He authored around 500 scientific works (including 20 books, also participating in the writing of manuals, treatises, and encyclopaedias) published in journals and magazines of several countries, such as: USA, Sweden, Yugoslavia, Tunisia, Senegal, Belgium, Hungary, Russia, Syria, Lebanon, China, France, England, India, Portugal, and Brazil.
He is an expert on history of medicine and philosophy of science, and wrote many articles on these topics.
He is the founder and president of the PalermoÕs Museum of Radiology, the only such institution in Italy. He is the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Albania, and was the Honorary Consul of Senegal in Sicily from 1980 to 2000. He collaborates with Corriere della Sera (Italy's most prestigious daily newspaper), Nuova Antologia magazine, and Giornale di Sicilia daily newspaper.
Thanks to his scientific achievements, he received all national merits, including the title of "Cavaliere di Gran Croce", awarded by the Republic of Italy in 1992.

Reasons for awarding the prize

Prof. Adelfio Elio Cardinale is one of the most innovating characters in the Italian radiology sector. He has given and still gives prestige to medicine. If Radiology has conquered dignity and a state-of-the-art position in Italy and abroad, that was also due to his contributions. He established professional relations with countries lying in the Mediterranean area.
With his constant work he promoted not only Radiology, but also radiological culture, by introducing significant progress in the field of education, transmitting interest and passion to the youth, pinning great expectations for the future on them, and continuously working toward the achievement of humanization in Medicine.
